Alligators are cold blooded ectothermic. There could be one tucked away at if you visit there. Gators were once on the brink of extinction in the Sunshine State but aggressive conservation efforts reversed their decline.


What we have here in the Sunshine State is known by scientists as Crocodylus acutus. Recently a story was broadcast about a drunken fellow who decided to leap into a canal and wrestle with a 'gator.

Crocs are in Keys waters, however the north American Croc is very shy and will not be in populated areas unless it is just passing through. I've been her over 20 years and spend MANY days on the water and have never scene one in person. There are a couple of alligators up in the Blue Hole in but gators only like fresh water so they are not in Keys waters. American saltwater crocodiles are indeed shy, alligators aren't. They are also rare--there aren't many of them. The link below leads to several good info sheets--Frank Mazzotti of the University of Florida knows them about as well as anyone. That leaves the possibility of seeing a croc. Search Youtube for a few videos. I believe they are sometimes seen in harbors, in the upper Keys, where you wouldn't be swimming anyway. If you ever saw one off one of the Keys beaches it would be quite the spectacle. Never heard of that. I should add that you are most in danger of things you can't see. Bacteria, viruses, toxic algae or plankton, raw sewage leaked out from a septic system, small jellyfish... But now I do : I feel more informed.

 


Touching, rubbing, bubble blowing and vocalizations are a part of the courtship. Although occasionally found in brackish marshes, they typically inhabit freshwater habitats surrounded by dense vegetation. Southern Florida, where freshwater from the Everglades National Park runs off into the sea, is the only place in the world where crocodiles co-exist with the much more common and aggressive American alligator.
